YummyColours Concept of the Year (2021)
    brand identity




Concept of the Year, create by YummyColours, is a response to traditional annual color forecasts. Instead of a trend, it is an open-ended prompt for work created through intentional and personal interpretation. It is an inspiration that addresses world events and meaningful markers in society. Unlike, colors, which are fixed and full of associations, concepts are an intangible meditation on a particular moment, image, or feeling.

The second annual Concept of the Year for 2022 is “Sleepwa(l)king”: a body of work from 70+ global collaborators presented as both a publication and a digital exhibition. While interning with YummyColours, I was tasked with developing a brand identity for this year’s concept, as well as an evergreen style guide for Concept of the Year (abbreviated as YCOY). The wordmark for Sleepwa(l)king is created from a custom typeface built off of Jugendreisen which imitates the fluid, dreamy in-between state of slumber and wakefulness. In addition, six unique, abstract symbols constructed from the letterforms of Sleepwa(l)king are used as recurring motifs in the style guide, and work to organize collaborators’ work into subcategories of the year’s concept.




The logomark for YCOY is dynamic, dimensional, and unpredictable, much like the work manifested from the annual concepts. The icon comes in a static and animated form, the latter of which rotates indefinitely, revealing that there is no starting or ending point to Concept of the Year.
